How do you print adhesive tapes?
The realization of a printed adhesive tape starts from the graphic project with the choice of Pantone colors that will be used in the printing phase. Once the graphic draft has been approved, the negatives are printed. Different procedures can be used, in our case a plotter is used. The negative is inserted in a UV device with water development to engrave the photopolymer plate that will be used to imprint the print on the tape. Once the development of the plate is finished, this is applied on one of the cylinders of the flexographic machine, where the operator will load the rolls of adhesive tape to be printed and the ink previously prepared according to the chosen Pantone. Finally the tapes are packaged in boxes of 72 rolls in the case of tapes 66 meters long and in boxes of 54 rolls for those 132 meters long.
The tape does not close the package properly: what to do?
To ensure the correct anchoring of the adhesive tape, it is recommended to keep the rolls in an environment with a temperature between 15 ° and 25 ° C and relative humidity not higher than 65%. If storage takes place in different conditions, before use, the roll must be reconditioned at environment temperature.
Since the anchoring performance also depends on the correct pressure with which the tape is applied, it is advisable to apply it with the appropriate pressure using the dispenser that we give and avoiding contact with the skin of the hands or other parts of the body as much as possible.
Sometimes the problem can depend on the cardboard boxes, which generally absorb and keep dirt on the surface, preventing the tape from adhering well. In these cases you can try to clean the cardboard with a dry cloth.
Alternatively, if from a test we note that the standard acrylic PPL tape (“OROSEI” tape) is not sufficient to seal the packaging correctly, you can opt for tapes with a higher adhesive mass (“CALASETTA” tape) or for tapes in PVC (“IGLESIAS” tape).
What is the difference between PPL and PVC adhesive tape?
The adhesive tapes in POLYPROPYLENE with water-based acrylic adhesive mass, in technical terms PPL or BOPP (Bioriented Polypropylene), are the most used solution for sealing packaging. They are characterized by low noise during unrolling, excellent resistance to aging and UV rays and an excellent quality / price ratio. They are called eco-friendly products because the adhesive does not contain solvents. PVC adhesive tapes with solvent-based adhesive mass are characterized by the fact that they do not leave glue residues on the surfaces and for this reason they can be used directly on glass, wood, plastic, ceramic, etc. They also offer greater anchoring, for this reason they are sometimes preferred when closing packaging in dusty environments or where the acrylic tape is not sufficiently adhesive.
SURFACE printing or sandwich printing: which is the best?
The printing technique used in most cases is that on the surface basically for 3 reasons: 1) small productions can be printed starting from just 72 rolls, 2) the start-up times are very fast and 3) the cost of the printing plate is rather low. This method is particularly suitable when printing 1 to 3 colors logos and writings. The sandwich printing is qualitatively better as the printing takes place between the film and the adhesive (hence the name “sandwich”), guaranteeing the protection of the printing (secure print). It is particularly suitable for negative prints (with full color different from white and brown) and for photographic prints where at least 4 colors are needed. The use of this printing method is less widespread for the following reasons: 1) to amortize the costs of the plates, the minimum order quantity is 1000 rolls, 2) production start-up times are long, at least 3 or 4 weeks, 3) the cost of the printing plates is much higher than the printing on the surface.
